In term of tourism, the Southwestern part of Lombok is knownmostly for its beautiful small islands (gilis). They are not as popular as thethree Gilis on the northwest (Gili Air, Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan), but thearea has a serious potential to be a world class destination.
Sekotong District, in particular, is a wonderful place toenjoy many islands and beaches. Sekotong is a peninsula located on the west,almost reaching the Nusa Penida of Klungkung, Bali. Mekaki Beach is one of thebeautiful beaches you can find in Sekotong.
Where in Sekotong is Mekaki Beach?
Most of the beautiful islands in Skotong is located to thenorth of the peninsula. The Gilis are scattered on the northern shore, easilyaccessible from the peninsula. Mekaki Beach, however, is located on thesouthern shore. This area is admittedly not the easiest place to reach as theroad are not yet well developed.
Mekaki is roughly 40 kilometers away from Mataram City, butsince you cannot drive in full speed, you might need roughly two hours to reachthis area. However, you will admire the natural beauty of Sekotong along theroad. Administratively, Mekaki Beach is located on Jl. Raya Mekaki, Pelangan,Sekotong Tengah, Lombok Barat Regency.
Mekaki Hills
Before you even reach the beach, you will have to go throughhilly area; the Mekaki Hills. Even if you are excited to play on the beach, itwill be hard not to enjoy the general scenery of these hills. There are lushgreen forests as well as rice fields that will invite you to look, and takepictures if you are into photography. As with any hills, the road you will haveto endure is meandering and rather challenging.
The Beach
First of all, Mekaki Beach is not a popular destination inLombok. You will barely see other tourists when you reach this place. You canenjoy the white sand stretch calmly, without having to worry about vying forthe best spot in the beach with other tourists. The beach is very long and youmost probably will get a big part of it for yourself most of the days.
The crescent-shaped beach has a rather calm waters becauseit is protected by to hills on each side. It means that you can either swim orsnorkel should you feel like it. You are free to roam and explore the wholeplace if you have the energy for it.
Barely any facility
Apart from the good road leading to the beach, there is notmuch else you can find in this beach. There are food stalls here and there, butthat’s about it. There is barely any decent accommodation nearby, so you’dbetter prepare your own food and drinks when you visit this beach. Beaches canbe very hot, never expose yourself to the danger of dehydration.
Mekaki Beach is a great secluded retreat you need to visitwhen you are in Lombok. There are few beaches this size that can offer thebeauty as well as serenity like Mekaki Beach.
